The Isaac Theatre Royal in partnership with ASB is pleased to offer the ASB Performing Arts Community Grant in support of locally created performing Arts in Christchurch, through a subsidised venue rental grant.

The Isaac Theatre Royal is a unique and multi-purpose venue and has been the Christchurch home to many of the national performing arts companies of New Zealand, as well as the preferred venue for International touring productions.

The Theatre Royal Charitable Foundation and ASB have teamed up to provide a pool of funds specifically targeted to lower the costs through a subsidy for the hire of the theatre’s two performance spaces. The grant is applicable to the main stage as well as the Gloucester Room for intimate performances and performing arts workshops. The objective is to grow Performing Arts in the region by enabling the utilisation of the theatre’s world-class facilities that small or larger organisations may not have the financial ability to afford.

Grant Information

What: Development of locally created Performing Arts in Christchurch through a subsidised venue rental grant at the Isaac Theatre Royal.

Background: Since the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake, the wider performing arts organisations in Canterbury have, in many cases, struggled to develop due to lack of performance space. With the rebuild of Isaac Theatre Royal the Theatre Royal Charitable Foundation and ASB have teamed up to provide a pool of funds specifically targeted to lower the costs through a subsidy for the hire of the ITR’s theatre performance spaces. The objective is to grow Performing Arts in the region by enabling the utilisation of the theatre’s world class facilities that small or larger organisations may not have the financial ability to afford.

Criteria: Performing Arts organisations are able to apply for this subsidy and each application is taken on its merits after satisfying some straightforward and easily quantifiable criteria. Applications from the following will be considered:

  • Canterbury not-for-profit Arts organisations, this may include schools and tertiary education facilities.
  • Other arts organisations in Canterbury who are contributing to the development of performing arts in the region.
  • Special projects. From time to time grants may be made for special projects that enhance performing arts in the region.
  • National Charitable organisations who are specifically assisting or implementing the staging and development of performing arts in Christchurch

Generally not applicable, but not excluded, are National, International or Commercial Arts Groups unless they satisfy the application criteria, or can demonstrate some mentoring or training workshop elements within their programmes for the future development of performing arts in Canterbury.

Subsidy: This is not a cash grant but a contribution toward the cost of the hire of the theatre space. In some cases it may be the whole venue cost, in others, such as the main auditorium it will be a contribution.

Spaces available:

  • The Isaac Theatre Royal auditorium. Seating capacity of up to 1260 (subject to booking availability). The Subsidy does not necessarily fully cover the total venue hire, nor technical and staffing costs.
  • Gloucester Room. This studio space has the capacity to seat 110. The Subsidy is intended to cover the total cost of rental of this space, pending length of season, or excessive technical requirements over and above those already included in the hire cost.
