Shakespeare, Tolkien, ITR and You!
For the first time in over a year we are delighted to actually give you, our Royal Friends, exclusive news on two very important SHOWS for a change instead of just earthquake damage updates! Read on, it is VERY exciting news…
Ian McKellen on Stage – with Shakespeare, Tolkien and You!
Touring NZ to Raise Funds for Christchurch’s Historic Isaac Theatre Royal
We are absolutely honoured to announce a very special actor touring NZ to fundraise specifically for our Grand Old Lady’s recovery from the earthquakes of last year. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellen is downing his staff and pointy blue hat at weekends to perform a special one-man show in 11 NZ centres to raise funds solely to restore Christchurch’s, Isaac Theatre Royal!
Sir Ian is currently in NZ reprising his Oscar-nominated Gandalf in The Hobbit films and, direct from the Miramar studios, he will spend his weekends in May and June performing Ian McKellen on Stage at local theatres around the country. He opens in Stratford on Saturday 5 May before heading to Palmerston North, Hamilton, Tauranga, Nelson, Auckland, Christchurch, Wanaka, Hastings, Wellington and Carterton.
A special Christchurch performance will be held at the Aurora Centre at Burnside High School on Saturday 2nd June at 7.30pm… And you as our dedicated and loyal friends and supporters will get first chance to buy tickets from next week Wednesday 11th April at 9.00am by booking at Ticketek. It is one show only in Christchurch and tickets are very limited, so DO NOT MISS this once in a lifetime performance and also know your enjoyment will help our much loved Theatre’s recovery at the same time!
Ian McKellen on Stage is a new show, devised in part by the audience. In this unique fundraiser, you can ask any question at all about Sir Ian’s work and life, as he retraces his journey from the north of England to the West End of London, to Broadway, Hollywood and to Middle Earth. There will be chat, reminiscence, gossip and performances from his Shakespeare and Tolkien repertoire – with maybe a song and a chance to act with him onstage!
“Basically it will be a party. Do come!” Sir Ian says, “the last time I was on stage in New Zealand was at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Waiting for Godot. I love this beautiful old theatre and want to help restore it as soon as possible.”
Tickets for Ian McKellen on Stage around the country are $50 adults/$25 students & children. All income (no hidden costs) will go directly to repair Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal – which was badly damaged in the series of 2011 earthquakes. Book Tickets.
BUDDY..! The man, the music… the legend
ITR’s long time Musical Theatre partners also have a special presentation at Aurora Centre in April… SHOWBIZ CHRISTCHURCH proudly presents… BUDDY
Over 50 years ago, the man who changed the face of popular music tragically died in a plane crash aged just 22. BUDDY the musical tells the story of the three years in which he became the world’s top recording artist with a show that features over 20 of Buddy Holly’s greatest rock’n’ roll hits including “La Bamba”, “Peggy Sue”, “That’ll Be The Day” and “Rave On”. BUDDY has had audiences on their feet in every corner of the globe and now “the world’s most successful rock ‘n’ roll musical” is coming to Christchurch in a toe-tapping, hand-clapping, get-up-dance extravaganza!
