That’s the fun side of the newsletter and now its back to reality… Despite MASSIVE consideration and effort to get a transitional ITR open in time for July 2013 to accommodate Royal NZ Ballet’s 60th anniversary, National Opera’s first visit to Christchurch and the 2013 Christchurch Arts Festival (amongst many others), the extensive structural works repairs have just made it impossible. Personally I am very disappointed but it is just the nature of things at present to get this Grand Old Lady fixed properly and beautifully restored. All good things take time. Our official statement is below:
Isaac Theatre Royal Transitional Opening 2013
After much deliberation based on the excessive additional costs to achieve and the significant risk potential for both the ITR and more importantly its clients, it has unfortunately become necessary to abandon the plans for the theatre’s proposed ‘transitional’ opening between July and September, 2013. Every possible consideration was given to make this work to provide a temporary ‘Bare Box’ functional theatre of between 800-950 seats during that period to stage some very important local, national and international performances and celebrate the return of a major programme of Arts events back into our recovering CBD. With costs escalating as well as the considerable added pressure it would have placed on the longer term recovery programme of the ITR however, the Theatre Royal Charitable Foundation simply cannot justify the additional risk and cost, on top of a growing rebuild budget of close to $30M. We look forward to being able to confirm re-opening dates for the ITR for the 2nd quarter of 2014 very soon.
Our social lives continue to have large holes with so many shows unable to come through the city, but we hope you can treat yourselves to Wellington for the amazing production of The Mousetrap. I was lucky enough to attend Opening Night in Sydney in early July and smiled all the way through! Live Theatre takes our minds to different places, entertains the brain and ALWAYS provides an element of surprise and excitement. The Mousetrap is a fabulous ‘whodunit?’ and an iconic murder-mystery play worldwide.
Treat your mind to somewhere else for now, have fun and do something different.
One day in early 2014 we’ll reopen our doors to you again and smile when we see you back at the ITR.
Stick with us.
