28 MAY 2015, AUCKLAND: The Imperial Ice Stars today announced that with great regret they will be unable to stage their production of Sleeping Beauty on Ice in Dunedin and Christchurch due to an unforeseen delay in the shipping of the set.

Containers carrying the set, staging, ice rink, sound and light equipment were shipped from London on 27 April and reached the port of Cartagena in Colombia on 12 May in accordance with the shipping schedule. The second leg of the journey was due to commence on 14 May with the set arriving into Auckland on 2 June, in plenty of time for the opening of the show on 11 June in Dunedin. However, due to congestion at Cartagena the ship that was to have picked up the containers was not able to stop as planned, causing extensive disruption to cargoes destined for Australia and New Zealand.

Speaking from the UK Head Office last night, James Cundall, CEO of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions and co-Producer of Imperial Ice Stars, said: “We are all gutted that we have been let down by the shipping company, and in turn we are letting down so many theatre-goers in Dunedin and Christchurch who had bought tickets for Sleeping Beauty on Ice. We have wanted to bring shows to the South Island for a long time now, returning to Christchurch after the earthquakes and bringing our show to Dunedin for the first time. To be thwarted by logistics that are beyond our control is both devastating and really frustrating. We have been touring ice shows to 22 countries across five continents for more than ten years now and we have never had this happen to us before. It goes without saying that we will be seeking a full explanation from the shipping company.”

“We have been advised that The Imperial Ice Stars containers will now leave Cartagena on 28 May and arrive into Auckland on 17 June so we are greatly relieved that we can perform our Auckland and Wellington seasons. We apologise profusely to all who were looking forward to seeing us in Dunedin and Christchurch, and will of course be refunding all ticket sales. We will do our best to bring The Imperial Ice Stars to the South Island as soon as we can reschedule a season.”

Neil Cox, Chief Executive of the Isaac Theatre Royal said “We are so extremely sorry to lose this unique winter production through such unfortunate and unforeseen freighting issues. Lunchbox Productions are one of the most professional international touring companies who continue to bring world class productions to NZ and have been big supporters and friends of our Theatre. The circumstances of this cancellation are simply beyond anyone’s control and just highlight the extent of the producers’ commitment to Christchurch, and New Zealand. We wish James and his team at Lunchbox  all the best for the North Island leg of the tour that is still going ahead and are very sorry this superb production will miss the South Island this time around, but we look forward to welcoming the Imperial Ice Stars back to the ITR in the not too distant future”.
