Level 1 procedures in place

The Isaac Theatre Royal is excited to welcome you back into the theatre.

We have put a number of steps in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all patrons coming into the theatre, and would like to highlight that the venue is a safe space to come to and encourage you to support the shows coming through, both local and national.

The steps that we have put in place, in conjunction with Ministry of Health guidelines, include:

Contact Tracing

There are Ministry of Health COVID Tracer QR codes at all entrances to the venues and on all floors of the venue. The QR codes on each level are specific to that area or space that you are in. For anyone without a smartphone, we also have a manual COVID Tracer sign-in sheet located at each entrance. These details are used solely for contact tracing and will be kept confidential unless needed by the Ministry of Health.

We encourage everyone coming into the venue to use these Contact Tracing procedures

Hygiene and Cleaning

We have hand sanitiser at: all entrances; Ticketek Box Office; all our bars; and in all foyer spaces throughout the venue.

Our FOH staff regularly wipe down all commonly touched surfaces with antiseptic wipes and spray, including: bar tops; hand rails; door handles;  and table tops. Our Foyer Supervisors regularly check the toilets on each level, ensuring they are clean, tidy and safe to use.

The theatre is given a thorough clean after every show, via our trusted cleaning supplier.

At our bars we encourage contactless payment via EFTPOS and payWave options.

Use of Masks

Masks are not mandatory, however if you feel more comfortable wearing a mask then we encourage you to do so. You may see our staff wearing masks, please don’t be out off by this, they are wearing them for their own benefit and as a venue we also encourage them to feel comfortable.

Heath Franklin's Chopper The Silencer

Laughing Stock Productions, promoters of Heath Franklin’s Chopper ‘The Silencer’ regrettably advise that due to the ongoing Corona Virus travel restrictions the tour in November has been postponed. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Heath Franklin would like to let his fans know;

“New Zealand is my favourite place to tour. It’s like a second home. I’ve been performing there since 2009 and I’m devastated to not be able to bring my new Chopper show to everybody in November. My team has tried every way to make this happen, but due to Covid, I legally can not enter the country until the government deems wearing a moustache and telling jokes as ‘essential’. Hold on to your tickets as we find new dates. I’ll be back next year. Stay safe. Kia kaha”

Laughing Stock Productions is currently looking to reschedule new dates in 2021. Existing tickets will be honoured for the new 2021 dates which will be communicated in due course.

Please hold onto your tickets until new dates are announced. For current ticket holders who are unable to attend their rescheduled show, refunds will be available

Fleetwood Mac - Running in the Shadows

Regrettably due to the impact of Covid19 – Running in the Shadows – The Australian Fleetwood Mac Show will be unable to travel and perform on October the 24th

Unfortunately this decision was one we did not want to make but due to the current pandemic it is unavoidable.

We are looking at securing a date in late 2021, and will announce this ASAP.

Come Together: Neil Young's Live Rust Rescheduled 21/09/2020

Due to continuing uncertainty around Covid-19 levels, the promoter of the three-part concert series COME TOGETHER, today announces that the first tour, NEIL YOUNG’S LIVE RUST, is being rescheduled to January.

New dates for LIVE RUST are: Christchurch, 14 January; Wellington, 15 January; and Auckland, 16 January.

The good news is that Liam Finn will now be available to join this epic line-up of artists, recreating the magic that bought critical acclaim last year when he teamed up with Jon Toogood, Samuel Flynn Scott, SJD, Delaney Davidson, Dianne Swann and Brett Adams to perform this iconic album, live on stage. The concert series will be under the direction of New Zealand’s acclaimed music producer Jol Mulholland.

“Jol’s one of the most talented guys I know – he’s got talent exuding from every pore.”

Neil Finn

Performed in its entirety with a bonus set of New York classics spanning Buffalo Springfield to Crazy Horse, this full-scale production will transport New Zealand audiences to a Neil Young rock gig they’ve only ever dreamed about.

Bridging solo acoustic jewels and explosive electrical storm, Live Rust sold platinum in the USA, but only in New Zealand did it reach #1, spending a staggering 50 weeks in the charts.

New Zealand, it’s time to rock out!

Reviews from last year’s Live Rust Album tour
‘To witness last night’s concert was to see a group of musicians at the very height of their combined musical excellence, putting on an unforgettable show that paid fitting tribute to an artist who helped invent and shape modern rock, folk, and country – it was a concert that many in attendance will never forget, and one that will reignite their passion for an unforgettable musical icon.”

“To hit that high point with 12 songs yet to be played is a feat within itself, but to elicit that same level of awe and appreciation from an entire theatre of die-hard fans for the remainder of the set was simply breathtaking – it was a collective performance that demanded adjectives yet-to-be invented within the English language. “
13th Floor review

“In a way, it shows how the music of the great rockers could live on when (God forbid) the originals are no longer with us: A great Neil Young concert, without Neil Young.  Rock & roll can never die, mate.”

“Violent Femmes Fans! We are all dressed up and nowhere to go. Half the band are in USA and the other half are in Australia. We can’t get together with Covid restrictions in both places. So we’re postponing our long-awaited New Zealand tour to February 2022. Thanks for your patience and be assured we want to see all of you and play for you when the coast is clear. In the meantime stay safe!” – Brian Ritchie / Violent Femmes

Violent Femmes eponymous debut from 1983 was THE soundtrack for so many. It was – and still remains – a firm favourite and a very influential record with its rugged pop sensibility and themes of alienation, isolation, sexual frustration and angst.Violent Femmes have continued to release great albums, and for their return to New Zealand shores they come with a brand new album – their 10th – Hotel Last Resort, which resides among the band’s finest work, simultaneously refining and redefining their one-of-a-kind take on American music.
Don’t miss Violent Femmes – the legendary Gordon Gano, Brian Ritchie, Blaise Garza and John Sparrow – live around New Zealand in February 2022 performing classics from across their entire career.

The Dame Malvina Major Foundation Christchurch committee is hosting a fundraiser.

A talented line-up of artists, many of whom are recipients of funding from the Foundation & until recently either studying or enjoying successful careers internationally are now back in Christchurch awaiting the end of lockdown. The Isaac Theatre Royal has been particularly adversely affected by the Covid-19 virus. It is important that we support this iconic theatrical venue, which is the spiritual heart of Canterbury’s Art Scene. It is also important the DMMF support young performing artists who are struggling with an unknown future despite years of dedication to their art form. Contracts have been cancelled, studies abroad disrupted, visa’s stalled, plus travel restrictions. Working together we are providing a platform & wonderful variety concert for audiences to share ‘Catch the Rising Stars’ a showcase of exceptional talent.

RNZB - VENUS RISING - UPDATE 4/09/2020

Due to the extension of Level 2.5 restrictions in Auckland and Level 2 across the rest of the country, we have had to make the devastating decision to cancel our upcoming national tour of Venus Rising which was due to open in Wellington on 10 September.

The final three seasons of the six originally scheduled for May to June – which were rescheduled for August to September, and then cancelled in all centres except Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland – have become untenable given the length of time the country will be in Level 2 or above.

All ticket holders will be offered a full refund.

Venus Rising is a stunning show and the entire company, who have worked so hard, and all of the RNZB team, find this decision very saddening, yet, at the same time, support the Government’s cautious approach in so diligently keeping the country as safe as possible. We plan to explore the possibility of streaming or broadcasting some or all of the show in the next few weeks, and are negotiating with the rights holders. We also hope to programme one or more of the four ballets as part of our 2021 season.

We would like to thank choreographers Twyla Tharp, Alice Topp, Andrea Schermoly and Sarah Foster-Sproull, together with Shelley Washington and Jesse Huot of the Tharp Organization and designers Jon Buswell, Randall G Chiarelli, Donna Jefferis and Daniel Wilson, for steadfastly keeping the faith with the RNZB over many weeks and months of change and uncertainty. Their beautiful ballets have enriched the lives of our dancers and artistic staff, and have nourished our souls.

We would like to thank all our venue partners for working so patiently with us on the many changes this national tour has seen in recent months, and we send them our condolences as they, no doubt, will have to cancel and postpone other shows and events in the coming weeks, on which they rely so much.

These are difficult times for the arts industry, and many of our colleagues in the sector, especially those in technical theatre and events logistics, have experienced the hardest winter of their careers.

In good news, rehearsals for the forthcoming Ryman Healthcare Season of The Sleeping Beauty are shaping up beautifully and it’s going to be a joyous way to end a difficult year. We look forward to sharing it with ballet lovers across the country from 29 October.

RNZB - VENUS RISING AUGUST UPDATE

Covid-19 Update

Due to the extension of Level 3 restrictions in Auckland and Level 2 restrictions in the rest of the country, in accordance with Government regulations that events involving more than 100 people should not proceed under Covid-19 Alert Level 2, we have had to make some changes to our performance schedule for the national tour of Venus Rising.

While we are still finalising details for the second half of the tour (Palmerston North, Dunedin, Napier and Auckland), we have confirmed details for Wellington and Christchurch.

The Wellington season, originally scheduled for Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 August, will now run at The Opera House from Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 September.

The Christchurch season, originally scheduled for Friday 28 to Saturday 29 August, will now run at the Isaac Theatre Royal from Friday 18 to Saturday 19 September.

Ticket holders in Wellington and Christchurch will be contacted by the RNZB or by Ticketmaster (Wellington) or Ticketek (Christchurch), in the next few days, to confirm that they wish to have their existing bookings transferred into new dates. If the new dates do not suit, and an exchange is not possible, a full refund will be given.

Whilst we regret any inconvenience this has caused, we also acknowledge how lucky we are in New Zealand to still have the prospect of performances in the near future, when many countries across the world don’t have the luxury of being able to present or attend ballet and arts events, some for the foreseeable future.

We are working closely with our venue partners and will confirm details for the final four regions as soon as we can.

Please keep checking our website or this Facebook page for the most up-to-date information.

RNZB - DANGEROUS LIAISONS

The Royal New Zealand Ballet suspends all rehearsals, performances and community events

The Royal New Zealand Ballet has suspended all rehearsals, performances, education and community activities until the spring.

The RNZB’s Venus Rising programme, which was to have premiered in Wellington on May 29 and tour to Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Napier, Tauranga and Palmerston North will now be postponed until August and September 2020. It will replace our new production of Dangerous Liaisons by award-winning choreographer Annabelle Lopez-Ochoa, with designs by Tatyana van Walsum.

Dangerous Liaisons will no longer be included in the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s 2020 Season and our intention is to include it in a future season. The Ryman Healthcare Season of The Sleeping Beauty, due to open in Wellington on 29 October and tour nationally through until 12 December, remains unaffected at this stage.

RNZB subscribers and individual ticket holders for Venus Rising and Dangerous Liaisons will be contacted directly by our ticketing staff to discuss options for returns, exchanges, donations and refunds. We are currently working through the ramifications of this process with our colleagues at venues and ticketing agencies and at this stage expect to be in touch with all ticket holders during the week of 20 April.

We remain committed to sharing our work with as many people as possible. At this time when our physical worlds are, of vital necessity, fenced in, we will always seek to open a window and give you an escape into the beautiful world of the living arts.

Please visit rnzb.org.nz for updates; we will also continue to post content on our Facebook and Instagram pages and invite dance lovers in New Zealand and beyond to keep in touch with our work on this virtual stage.

SLEEPING BEAUTY

The Promoters of Sleeping Beauty regrettably advise that due to the ongoing global situation regarding Coronavirus and the associated travel restrictions, the event has been postponed to 2021.

Existing tickets will be honoured for the new tour dates, which will be communicated in due course.

For current ticket holders who are unable to attend their rescheduled show, refunds are also available.

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE

Stewart & Tricia of Stetson Productions are saddened to advise that YESTERDAY ONCE MORE  cannot proceed currently and is therefore postponed.

The USA Producers are very keen that we secure another run of dates – which Stewart is working on right now.

Sadly, and for some it’s a case of unavailability, the new tour will not include Oamaru, Ashburton and Putaruru .

The proposed dates will be in March 2021.

The exact dates will be known hopefully in a few days – meantime please hold on to your tickets as all seats will be valid for the new date in your chosen City.

Refunds will be made to holders of tickets to Oamaru, Ashburton and Putaruru.

Thanks for your patience and support in this unprecedented time and we wish you all good health.

FLY MY PRETTIES

Kia ora whānau, we are postponing our May shows to November 2020. Please bear with us while we confirm the new dates.

We will contact all ticket holders as soon as we can with the options to either retain your tickets for the new date 🙏🙏🙏 or receive a refund. We ask those who can both afford & make the new dates to stick with us & the arts.

Safety is the most important thing right now. We encourage everyone to follow the guidance of the government, to look after each other & stay safe, & look forward to seeing you a little bit later in 2020.

NZ OPERA - THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO

New Zealand Opera reschedules part of 2020 season

Thursday 19 March, 2020

New Zealand Opera has made the difficult decision to reschedule our 2020 production of The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the Government directive on audience sizes and the travel restrictions impacting international cast and creatives, we believe this is the only possible decision and one that prioritises the health and wellbeing of our performers, crew, orchestras, audiences and community at large.

We intend to remount The Marriage of Figaro in September/October 2021. This will be the same new production that was due to start rehearsing next month, and will continue the exciting work already achieved. As soon as we are able to confirm dates and venues, we will work with the existing cast, creatives and production team to give them first refusal on their previous roles.

The Christchurch season of Eight Songs for a Mad King has also been rescheduled to the end of this year. We will contact each ticket holder individually to discuss options regarding their ticket purchases.

Ticket holders for both productions will be contacted directly to arrange for credits or refunds.

At this stage we are hopeful that Semele (10 – 19 September in Auckland) and our national tour of The Human Voice (6 October – 6 November) will go ahead as planned.

“This is an extremely uncertain time for everyone, and while we are all extremely disappointed not to be in a position to bring these productions to audiences as planned, we have no other option but to reschedule,” says General Director Thomas de Mallet Burgess.

“The year started so well for New Zealand Opera with such a favourable response to our reimagining opera with Eight Songs for a Mad King. We look forward to picking up where we left off as soon as circumstances permit. In the meantime we’ll be bringing forward new project ideas in the digital space. The most important thing at this time is to focus on resilience and wellbeing, and our priority over the coming weeks is to look after our staff and community.”

FASTLOVE - A TRIBUTE TO GEORGE MICHAEL
With much regret, but in line with the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic that has resulted in a restriction on mass gatherings and strict requirements for entry to Australia and New Zealand – The Prestige Presents advises that all dates in the Fastlove – Fastlove – A Tribute to George Michael Australian and New Zealand tour scheduled for May 2020 will be postponed.

Our Fastlove members have said ‘We were so thrilled to be coming to visit our fans in Australia for the third time and to be visiting New Zealand for the first, but the health and safety of our audiences and all those involved in our show is absolutely paramount and so we will look forward to seeing you all in 2021′

We are finalising all the details of each new date and every patron will be contacted as soon as possible with details of the new performance date in 2021.

EVERYBODY INTERESTING IS GAY
“After careful consideration, planning and reviewing the developing situation with COVID-19, it is with great regret that the producers of Everybody Interesting Is Gay have decided  to cancel this Friday’s performance at the Gloucester Room at the Isaac Theatre Royal.

We have been very much looking forward to bringing this show to Christchurch as part of Christchurch Pride, but feel as though we must minimise risk to ourselves and the community at this time.

We will look at restaging the show for Christchurch audiences later in the year, once precautionary measures around COVID-19 have been lifted.”

SHOWBIZ CHRISTCHURCH - MY FAIR LADY

Media Release: 17 March 2020

Covid-19 and Showbiz Christchurch As we all face the difficult challenge of responding to COVID-19, Showbiz Christchurch regrettably announces the postponement of the 2020 seasons of My Fair Lady, Chess in Concert and Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story.

The Ministry of Health has advised: To slow the spread of COVID-19, gatherings of 500 people or more in close proximity will be cancelled. This includes festivals, fairs, sporting, religious and cultural events. This will be regularly reviewed. The intent of the measures is to avoid non-essential gatherings which may facilitate the spread of COVID-19.

The My Fair Lady season will move to 11-26 September 2020 and Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story will provisionally open in September 2021. Chess in Concert will be rescheduled to future dates.

Showbiz Christchurch customers with tickets to the 2020 Saunders & Co Season of performances purchased through Ticketek will be contacted in due course by Ticketek to offer flexible choices, including:

• converting tickets to FlexiTickets, which can be used for any Showbiz production up until October 2021,

• ticket exchange,

• a refund.

We continue to ask people to follow Ministry of Health advice and stay home if they are feeling unwell, practice good coughing and sneezing hygiene, and frequently wash or sanitise their hands.

We know this is a difficult time for our community and we extend our solidarity to all of those who are impacted, especially staff, contractors, artists, performers, clients, local retail and hospitality operators, accommodation and transport providers whose livelihood depends on a vibrant and fully functioning Arts industry.

We know that the arts play a critical role in uplifting and supporting our community and we’ll continue to explore ways to continue to bring the performing arts to Cantabrians during this time.
