Dancing Like the Stars 2015
30 June 2015–1 July 2015
Dancing Like the Stars performance evenings are the culmination of a free nine-week programme that brings dance into primary (with a focus on low decile) schools. In the first half of the programme each school learns a range of dance moves associated with a particular dance style, in the second half of the programme, each school is taught a choreographed dance routine. During the final week the schools perform their routine in a professional theatre context. Dance styles on offer in 2015 include, contemporary, jazz, ceroc, salsa, bachata merengue, ballroom, integrated dance and Samba de Gafieira.
The primary aim of the programme is to promote and provide an active lifestyle through dance - a non-competitive form of physical activity - to children who would not normally be able to participate in dance for recreation. The programme has several secondary aims/benefits, which include building basic social skills and interactions, team building and teaching children about other cultures.
In 2015 the project is running the project in 17 Christchurch schools with the support of the Christchurch City Council, The Southern Trust, The Mainland Foundation, IHC, Pegasus Health and The New Zealand Red Cross.
Participating schools for 2015 are: Gilberthorpes, Sacred Heart, Wharenui, Parkview, Bishopdale, Bamford, New Brighton Catholic, St James, Mairehau, Linwood Avenue, Westburn unit at Allenvale, West Spreydon (2 classes), Ferndale, Te Waka, Rawhiti and Northcote.
Tickets are free of charge with a donation asked for after the show to support next years programme.
