The NBR New Zealand Opera presents The National Tour of Humperdinck's
Hansel and Gretel
July 19–21, 2008
Sugar-coated life lessons for all ages
This century-old take on a popular Grimm fairytale still resonates today, as the audience follows Hansel and Gretel along the overgrown path from childhood innocence to adult awareness.
This new production of Hansel and Gretel boasts an all New Zealand cast and creative team. Directed by well-loved New Zealand actor Michael Hurst, who describes his interpretation of Hansel and Gretel as 'fairytale opera with a kick'. Playing the roles of both Witch and Mother is acclaimed mezzo soprano Helen Medlyn. Two rising stars, soprano Ana James and mezzo-soprano Anna Pierard, play Gretel and Hansel respectively.
New Zealander Tecwyn Evans, who has worked with many of the great British opera companies and festivals over the past decade, and Michael Vinten, The NBR New Zealand Opera's highly regarded Associate Conductor (Wellington), will share the conducting. The Christchurch Symphony will play the South Island leg.
