Beethoven - Symphony No.7 in A Major

In this closing programme of the Masterworks series, Edo de Waart showcases the emotional power and technical prowess of the NZSO.

The sparkling overture from A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a delicious confectionery of sound. Composed when Mendelssohn was 17, it has remained a firm favourite for good reason. As we are led into Shakespeare’s comedy, we can still marvel at the precocious wit that created such magical music.

Such dramatic flair is also a hallmark of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24. Pitting orchestra against piano, Mozart weaves a more tragic narrative that is no less compelling. Bringing this music alive is the brilliant piano virtuoso Ronald Brautigam. One of Holland’s most respected musicians, his stylish and nuanced performances of Mozart has seen him work with the world’s leading orchestras.

We move from the tragic to the sublime in Beethoven’s glorious Symphony No. 7. Dazzling, complex and joyful, Wagner called this work ‘an apotheosis of dance’.
