The ever-dazzling International Queen of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese, is set to visit New Zealand…

The ever-dazzling International Queen of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese, is set to visit New Zealand for the very first time this December where she will debut the most lavish touring burlesque show in history – her all-new revue DITA VON TEESE: GLAMONATRIX.

The uber-glamorous variety show will take audiences on a stunning visual journey with one show-stopping performance after another, featuring costumes created by famed corset maker Mister Pearl, British designer Jenny Packham, French couturier Alexis Mabille, burlesque icon Catherine D’Lish, Brooke Brothers and more. Shoe aficionados will delight in the extraordinary bespoke footwear by Christian Louboutin.

The 2019 tour marks Dita’s first visit to New Zealand and follows two sold out Australian runs in the past four years. Von Teese’s 2018 “The Art of the Teese” is the most successful burlesque tour of all time and played to sold out theatres in cities across the world. It was a triumphant introduction of her full-length revue to Europe, selling out five nights at The London Palladium and counting the Royals amongst attendees at the Opera Garnier in Monaco.

Fans can expect a full evening of comedy and sophisticated striptease that celebrates diverse beauty. Far from being a typical burlesque show, Dita elevates and modernizes the classic 1940’s variety show, with both male and female forms glorified in a body-positive way that inspires and uplifts.

Always ahead of the curve, Dita’s casting has consistently been inclusive, diverse, and multi-faceted, showcasing the talents of male, female, and gender-fluid performers from around the world to create a body-positive, celebratory show like no other.

As the consummate performer in modern burlesque, Von Teese’s exhilarating live shows are world-renowned and draw fans from every corner of the globe. With over one million tickets sold, and an unprecedented quality of production in burlesque, it is clear why Von Teese’s self-produced tours are the gold standard of the modern burlesque revival.

“With a fan club that includes Marc Jacobs, Elton John, and Christian Louboutin, Dita Von Teese is giving burlesque a sweetly seductive second life, and more than a touch of class.” - Vanity Fair

Anyone who has followed Cowboy Junkies’ three-decade-long journey knows the band has always remained true to its unique artistic vision. In 1988, they proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise with its introspective, quiet intensity. Their new album, All That Reckoning, once again gently shakes the listener to wake up. It may be the most powerful album Cowboy Junkies have yet recorded.

This is a long awaited return for this much celebrated artist, who was last in Australia and New Zealand with Plácido Domingo performing arena shows in 2011. Britain’s best-selling classical artist of the past 25 years, who first came to public attention when she sang at Westminster Cathedral, honouring Pope John Paul II’s silver jubilee in 2003, will land in New Zealand in November.

“When I performed in Christchurch in 2011 with Placido Domingo, I always said I would return to see the city rebuilt and in a stronger place,” says Katherine Jenkins. “I already feel emotional and excited at the thought of singing there in November and meeting the incredibly inspirational people who helped put on the charity concert those years ago.”

Following on from the success of her debut album PREMIERE, which topped the classical charts for eight weeks in a row, making her the fastest-selling soprano of all time, Katherine Jenkins continued her meteoric rise to fame, with performances at the Rugby World Cup, at Buckingham Palace for The Queen, at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo and iconic venues including Wembley Stadium and The Sydney Opera House.

Since becoming an international name, Katherine Jenkins has gone on to release 11 critically acclaimed studio albums, perform for the troops in Afghanistan, receive the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and numerous music awards, solidifying herself as one of the world’s most prolific crossover artists.

Blessed by fairies, Aurora grew into a beautiful young woman, protected by everyone who loved her from the evil beyond the castle walls. On her 16th birthday, Aurora’s world was shattered by the malevolent Carabosse, but, saved from certain death by the kindly Lilac Fairy, she and her kingdom slept for a hundred years, until woken by a brave and handsome prince. Restored to life and health, Aurora and her prince ruled over the kingdom with wisdom and kindness, in a happy golden age of love and beauty.

The Sleeping Beauty is the quintessential classical ballet. The grandest of fairy tales, luxuriating in Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous orchestral score, it spills over with fairies, woodland sprites, handsome princes and, at its heart, an enchanting princess. This new Sleeping Beauty will unfurl like a fragrant summer rose, with all the radiance and joy that any ballet lover, young or old, could wish for.

For Christmas 2020, The RNZB are delighted to present a magical new production by Australian choreographer Danielle Rowe, with beautiful traditional costumes designed by Spanish dancer-turned-designer Dores Andre and sets by master designer Howard C Jones, creator of the RNZB’s much-loved production of Giselle.

All the hallmarks of the fairy tale classic will feature, including the iconic Rose Adagio in Act I and a spectacular wedding celebration, with grand pas de deux, in Act III. RNZB Principal Conductor Hamish McKeich will conduct live orchestral accompaniment.

Share the joy of a timeless classic with the young and young at heart next Christmas.

Companion seats

The Royal New Zealand Ballet is pleased to make a free companion seat available to anyone with a disability which significantly affects their ability to independently attend an RNZB performance or event.
