Call for Submissions!
We're inviting playwrights to submit new and in-development work for the 2026 Festival of New Theatre.
The Festival of New Theatre is an opportunity for playwrights to develop and test new work through professionally supported staged readings and audience feedback forums. Selected playwrights will have their work presented as a staged reading at the Isaac Theatre Royal, providing the opportunity to hear their work performed and gain insights from audiences and theatre-makers.
About the Festival of New Theatre
The Festival of New Theatre is a celebration of bold new stories and the artists creating them. Presented by Isaac Theatre Royal in partnership with Rollicking Entertainment, the festival showcases original works by playwrights from across Ōtautahi and the wider South Island through professionally supported staged readings.
For participating playwrights, the festival is an important step in the life of a new work - providing the opportunity to hear it performed, engage with audiences and become part of a wider community of theatre-makers.
2026 Festival of New Theatre
-
The 2026 Festival of New Theatre is open to playwrights based in Ōtautahi and the wider South Island. We welcome submissions from writers of all backgrounds, ages and experience levels.
The Festival seeks to uplift voices, stories and artistic practices that have been historically underrepresented on Aotearoa New Zealand stages and encourages submissions from playwrights whose work broadens the range of perspectives represented in our theatre sector. -
We are seeking original new plays or works-in-development in any genre or style.
Eligible plays must:
- Require between 1 and 4 actors
atives, where appropriate - Be between 40 and 75 minutes in length
- Be an existing or proposed script that has not yet premiered
We're less interested in a polished final draft than in a strong, distinctive voice, compelling characters and a story with exciting theatrical potential.
- Require between 1 and 4 actors
-
- A professionally supported staged reading presented as part of the 2026 Festival of New Theatre
- Collaboration with a director and performers to prepare the reading
- Audience feedback through post-reading discussion forums
- The opportunity to hear your work performed in front of a live audience
- The profile of being part of the Isaac Theatre Royal's new writing programme
- Potential consideration for future development opportunities through the Isaac Theatre Royal's residency and new work initiatives, where appropriate
-
*Please note: At the application stage, playwrights are only required to submit a project description and supporting materials. Full scripts are not required.
Please submit:
- A one-paragraph description of your proposed or existing play.
- A writing sample of 10 pages or less that demonstrates your writing style.
- A short artist bio (one or two paragraphs). We are interested in learning about who you are as an artist - we are not concerned with extensive writing credits or professional achievements.
